SIMULACRUM
Show Window Exhibition #4:

22nd of December 2020 - 24th of January 2021
Monday through Friday, 10 AM - 5 PM

Emser Str. 124 on the corner of Ilsestr.

The SIMULACRUM exhibition cycle continues with images in our show windows looking out onto the street. As the WerkStadt is not yet able to do exhibitions inside the project space that are open to the public due to COVID-19, fittingly the artworks will look out into the surrounding neighborhood.

"This small body of work began life in 2015, exploring the boundary line on walls between neighbouring, terraced dwellings in specific, densely populated areas. These intersections, the meeting points of two physical existences, are marked by commonalities and contrasts: in complexion, colour, texture, precision, maintenance, structural integrity and conformity. Some boundaries appear as impermeable, fortress-like barriers; others are softer, more informal or even non-existent.

Originally entitled "Beige Wars" this project (intended then as a parody of suburban domestic life) was shelved. It was reopened (May 2020) in the midst of the first wave of the COVID pandemic; a critical period when our understandings of community, personal space and safety were thrown into turmoil, and as the concept of a "New Normal" began its new, unpredictable and conflicted journey: help, support, unity and interdependence on the one hand; fear, anxiety, distancing and isolation on the other. Re-examining these photographs (and now making new ones), it is apparent that 'the boundary' is rapidly acquiring new, fluid meanings, both literally and metaphorically."
