CAROL ANNE CONNOLLY “For I is Someone Else”

‘For I is Someone Else’ ist eine Ausstellung über die Politik der Beeinflussung, Mitbenutzung und Aneignung in der Musik. Connolly präsentiert die Behauptung, dass alle Arbeiten und Werke von anderen beeinflusst sind. Von diesem Standpunkt aus betrachtet sie die verschiedenen Arten des Widerstands gegen das Urheberrecht und die dahinterliegende Politik. Sie untersucht die politischen Motivationen der Musiker aus den 1930er Jahren bis heute, z.B. Künstler wie Woody Guthrie und Chuck D von Public Enemy, und verfolgt wie sich die Praxis des Aneignens, des Teilens und der
Einflussnahme politisch verändert hat.

Die bildende Künstlerin Connolly beschäftigt sich mit der Frage, wie das physische und kulturelle Umfeld in der heutigen Gesellschaft organisiert ist. Sie fokussiert dabei die ökonomischen und politischen Strukturen in ihrer Entwicklung und aktuellen Bedeutung für Bürger, Gemeinschaften und Landschaften. Ihr künstlerischer Prozess zielt auf die Entwicklung von Denk- und Handlungsweisen, die sich um die Umkehrung, Unterminierung oder das Aufzeigen von Alternativen zu diesen Mächten und Gedankenstrukturen bemühen. Connolly verwendet für ihre Darstellungen hauptsächlich die Medien Photographie, Video, Licht- und Soundinstallation sowie bildnerische Arbeiten.

‘For I is Someone Else’, an exhibition of work about the politics of influence, sharing and appropriation in music. Connolly presents the argument that all work is influenced by another, and from that point of view looks at practices and modes of resistance that challenge the concept of copyright law and the politics behind it. Her research encompasses the political motivations of musicians from the 1930′s through to contemporary times, artists such as Woody Guthrie and Chuck D from Public Enemy for example, and looks at how the practices of appropriation, sharing and influence have politically developed over time.

As a visual artist, Connolly’s main focus is on the organization of the physical and cultural environment in contemporary society. She particularly interested in looking at economic and political structures – how they have developed and how they influence or affect citizens, communities and landscapes today. Through the artistic process, she aims to develop ways of thinking and action that attempt to invert, undermine or demonstrate alternatives to these power/thought structures. She primarily employs photography, video, light installation, sound and sculptural works in her efforts to
depict these ideas.
